The Brazilian
Literature
A project dedicated to promoting reading, literary memory, and Brazilian Portuguese.
Discover and share works written by Brazilian authors.
More reading: a call for attention
Reading in Brazil faces a silent crisis. According to the latest edition of the Portraits of Reading in Brazil (2024) survey, about 6.7 million people no longer consider themselves readers compared to the previous edition. Today, 53% of the Brazilian population says they haven't read, not even partially, a book in the last three months.
The contrast with other countries is stark. While Canada averages 12 books per person per year, Brazil doesn't exceed 2.4. This gap reflects factors like lack of access, encouragement, and competition with other media. Encouraging reading is essential to develop critical thinking and value culture.
Our mission: to value Brazilian literature
Brazilian Literature deserves to be discovered, rediscovered, and shared. This site gathers books, authors, and stories that shaped (and still shape) the country's culture. Our goal is to make access to national literature simpler, more appealing, and present in people's lives.
Here, you'll find information about Brazilian books and authors, along with a space open to contributions. Every suggestion, curiosity, or discovery helps keep the strength of our literature alive.
